Buyer Beware 買い手はご用心

As I was walking to the check-out counter in the supermarket I passed a rack with special deals on it. It is the kind of rack which mothers with small children avoid because the shelves generally contain sweet, not-so-healthy goods. One of the displays caught my attention. A cursory glance at it told me that the snack contained cheese. I really like cheese and it is not always possible to get the cheeses that I like in Japan. The price was good so I added a box to my basket.

As soon as I got home I decided that I must sample my purchase. The snacks were much smaller than I had thought and did not taste as I expected. On closer examination of the box I spied a small picture of a cat at the top of the box. Yes, you guessed it! It was actually cat food! I can personally guarantee that this particular snack will not damage your moggie.

スーパーマーケットのレジを通る手前に、特別セールの棚がありました。

普通、これらの棚には、母親が子供に買いたくない、甘いお菓子が陳列されています。

その中に、チーズのお菓子がありました。

私はチーズが好きで、日本では自分の気に入ったチーズはあまり見かけません。

そのチーズは値段も手ごろだったので買いました。

家に帰ってから、そのチーズを食べてみました。

予想よりもずっと小さく、味も期待したほどよくありませんでした。

そのチーズのお菓子の箱をよく見てみると、上の方に猫の絵が小さくかいてありました。

何と、それは猫の食べ物だったのです。

I have learnt two things today; that cats eat cheese and that it pays to “read the small print”.

二つのことを学びました。ひとつは、猫もチーズを食べると言うことです。

二つめは、物を買う時には、よく見てから、買うことです。
