明るい面を見る Looking on the Bright Side
先日ニュージーランドから来た妻の妹のRuthと家内のStellaと三人で、箱根と小田原城の観光に行きました。
帰りに東名高速道路から首都高速道路に乗りました。
ところが分岐点を間違えてしまい、山手トンネルの地下高速道路に入ってしまいました。
私の車は11年経った中古車で、カーナビには最近できたこのトンネルは載っていませんでした。
また地下なのでスマートフォンのグーグルマップを使用することができませんでした。
それで、浦安に向かっていなければならないのに、池袋方面へ行ってしまいました。
車は中野、新宿を通り過ぎ、池袋に向かって走って行きました。
一度高速に入ってしまうと、なかなか出られません。
私は21年もニュージーランドに住んでいたこともあり、首都高速はあまり通ったことが無いのでよくわかりません。
とても不安な気持ちになりました。
地上に出る出口がなかなか見つかりませんでしたが、やっと見つけて、元来た道を逆戻りして、なんとか帰る道を探しました。
私は、全く無駄な、ストレスの溜まる、時間を持ったこと、ガソリンの無駄などを考えましたが、NZから来た、Ruthはこんな長いトンネルを走ったことが無いので、とてもスリルのある珍しい体験をしたと大喜びでした。
こんなに喜んでくれたことを思うと、入り口を間違え、無駄な時間、エネルギーを使って、目的地からそれて走ったことは、それほどロスではなかったと思いました。

Last week I went with my wife, Stella and my wife`s sister, Ruth who had come to visit from New Zealand to look at Hakone and Odawara Castle. On the way home, we changed from Tomei expressway to the Metropolitan expressway. Unfortunately, I mistook the junction and, by mistake, entered the Yamate tunnel which runs underneath Yamate Road. The GPS on my eleven-year-old car did not show the recently completed tunnel. To make matters worse, we could not access the Google map on our phones while underground. As a result, although we were supposed to be headed for Urayasu in Chiba prefecture we ended up in the opposite direction on the far side of Tokyo near Ikebukuro. Once we got into the tunnel there were few exits so it was hard to get out of it and we had no idea where we were.
I lived in New Zealand for 21 years and had not driven on the Metropolitan Expressway very much so was at a loss as to what to do. I felt extremely apprehensive. At last we came across an exit from the tunnel, came above ground and were able finally to somehow make our way home. All I could think of was the waste of time and gasoline and the stress incurred but Ruth, who had come from New Zealand said how excited she was to have the unexpected thrill of driving in such a long tunnel underground for the first time in her life. Seeing her pleasure in the experience I realized that the time, gasoline and stress was not such a waste after all.
