Snow Festival 雪祭り

In February, I was able to go to the Snow Festival in Sapporo, Japan. It is something I had been wanting to do for some time. It was my first time to visit Hokkaido so I was really looking forward to it.

We were amazed at the sculptures both in ice and in snow and wondered how the sculptors managed to make it all look so real. It snowed a bit every day so some of the sculptures had extra snow on them which slightly distorted their original shape. We had to take care walking on the roads as it was very slippery in some places.

One day, we took the cable car up Mount Moiwa which is the mountain closest to the city. It was a sunny day with blue skies so the view from the top of the mountain was spectacular.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience apart from one thing: the cost of the room we had booked. It was advertised as luxury accommodation but there was no elevator upstairs and only a double bed and bunks in the room. However, the biggest shock of all was the price: $1700 for three nights!! Checking prices now, after the Snow Festival is over we can see that it is normally $235 for three nights. It is difficult to understand how such a markup in prices can be justified even though it was a busy season.

今年の二月に私は、日本の札幌で開かれた雪まつりに行きました。

長い間この雪まつりに生きたいと願っていました。

北海道に行くのは初めてなのでとても期待していました。

私たちは雪や氷で作った彫像の作品を見て、本物のように造られた、精巧さに驚きました。

雪が毎日降り続けたので、作品の上に雪が降り、造られた元とは少し変形しているようなものもありました。

道路はとても滑り易かったので、注意しなければなりませんでした。

街の近くにある藻岩山までのケーブルカーに乗りました。

その時は晴れて青空でしたので、山の頂上からの景色は壮大でした。

この雪まつりの体験はあること一つを除いて、とても素晴らしかったです。

宿泊場所は、高級ホテルとして宣伝されていましたが、質素な二段ベッドがあるだけでした。

そして、三日間の宿泊費は約13万円（129,200円）でした。

しかし雪祭りが終わった同じホテルの三日間の値段は17,860円です。（雪祭りの時には、なんと7.2倍の値上がりです。）

どんなに、混雑するからと言って、これだけの値段に挙げることは正当化することはできないと思います。
