コロシアム Colosseum
昨年の九月にイタリヤのローマを訪れ、コロシアムを見学してきました。
コロシアムは約二千年前にローマ帝国時代に作られた円形競技場、娯楽施設です。
そこでは、剣闘士が殺し合い、人間が猛獣で殺されることが行われたのですから残酷です。
ローマの市民はそれを楽しみとして見ていたのです。
いつの時代にも人間の罪深さ、不道徳が表されています。
その円形競技場は長径が188m、短径156mの楕円形で、高さは48m、約5万人を収容できました。
その巨大な大きさに圧倒されました。
また当時の建築土木技術の高さに驚きました。
馬車が走る競技場のグランドの下に多くの地下の部屋があり、剣闘士の控室や、猛獣が入れられていました。
グランドの下から蓋が開き、猛獣が、剣闘士やクリスチャンを襲う仕掛けになっていたのです。
ベンハーやグラディエイターの映画に出てくるように二頭の馬に、四頭の馬に引かれた馬車が全速力で走るのですから床の強度は最高のものでなければなりません。
その下にはいくつもの部屋が作られているのですから。
今から二千年前に、今日の科学技術を用いても作り難い構造の建築物を人間や家畜の労働力で築いたのですから気が遠くなります。
人間は神の形に似せて作られたので、他の動物にない知能があるのでしょう。
神はこのように、人をご自身のかたちに創造された。神のかたちに彼を創造し、男と女とに彼らを創造された。創世記 1:27
In September last year, we visited Rome and went to see the Colosseum while there. It was an amphitheatre built about 2000 years ago during the Roman Empire. It is a cruel place where gladiators fought one another, and people were eaten by wild beasts. The Roman people were entertained by such spectacles. It demonstrates the decadence of the time.
The Colosseum was 188 metres long, 156 metres wide and 48 metres high. About 50,000 people could be seated in it. Its sheer size is overwhelming. The technology of those days is also amazing. Horses and chariots could run around the arena under which are many rooms where the gladiators prepared and wild animals were kept until they were released through trapdoors up onto the arena to attack gladiators and Christians.
There were scenes in Ben Hur and Gladiator movies where chariots pulled by two or four horses raced around the arena. It must have been an extremely sturdy structure for this to happen. Despite the advancement in technology today it would still be difficult to build such a structure so when we remember that it was actually built over 2000 years ago we cannot but be astounded at the manpower and brilliance displayed. Man is made in the image of God so we have intelligence not seen in other animals.
