ピラトの判決 Pilate's Judgement

ある欲の深い裁判官がいました。

ある時、この裁判官の法廷で、強盗が裁判にかけられました。

強盗は弁護士を通し、裁判官にメモを渡しました。

メモには、「私を無罪にしてくれたら、盗んだお金1億円の半分の5千万円を裁判官に差し上げます。」と書かれていました。

それで、裁判官は被告の強盗を無罪にしました。

しかし、約束の日までに、そのお金は裁判官に届きませんでした。

それで、裁判官がその強盗に電話すると、強盗は答えました。

「裁判官殿、私は無罪を宣告されました。という事は、お金を盗んでいないという事です。という事は約束の5千万円もないという事です。」

There was once a very greedy judge. A thief was brought into his court room. The thief passed a note to the judge via his lawyer: “If you pronounce me innocent I will give you half of the stolen money, $500,000.” After reading the note the judge announced that the thief was not guilty. However, even when the day came that the thief should give the promised money to the judge, the money was not forthcoming. Worried, the judge called the thief and was told, “Sir, I was pronounced innocent. That means that I did not steal money and that I do not have $500,000 to hand over to you!”

ピラトにとっては、大祭司が問うた、「お前は神の子、メシアなのか」ということは全く問題になりませんでした。

ローマ総督である彼は、ユダヤ人たちの信仰の問題は、自分の管轄外です。

彼にとって大事なことは、この地の治安を維持することです。

それで、ピラトにとって、イエスが有罪か無罪かの有無は、ローマの支配を認め従うか、それに反抗するかによるのでした。

それを確かめるための問いが、「お前がユダヤ人の王なのか」でした。

政治的、軍事的な支配者の「王であると」答えれば、ローマの支配を否定することになります。

それはローマの総督にとって罰すべき罪になります。

「王なのか」と言う質問に対して、イエスは「あなたが言っています。」と答えで、肯定でも否定でもありませんでした。

Unlike the priests, Pilate was not concerned with the problem of whether Jesus said He was the Messiah, the Son of God or not. As Roman governor, questions regarding the Jewish faith were outside Pilate`s jurisdiction. The most important thing for him was to maintain the peace of the area. Whether Jesus was guilty or not depended on whether or not He acknowledged the authority of Rome. That is why he asked Jesus, “Are you the King of the Jews?” If He said he was politically and militarily a king, that would mean He was opposed to the Roman government. In that case Pilate, as governor, must punish Jesus. In response to the question, Jesus responded, “Yes, it is as you say.”, which is neither affirming nor negating.

裁判官の義務は、正義を遂行し、悪を正すことです。

良心に基づき公正に裁くことです。

被告が罪を犯したかどうか客観的に、冷静に、正確に判断して、また、罪の内容に応じて裁くべきです。

無罪であると分かっている被告であれば、裁判官は正義を遂行するために無罪の判決を下し、被告を釈放しなければなりません。

それが裁判官の責任ある行為です。真実を曲げることはできないはずです。

It is the responsibility of a judge to maintain what is right and punish that which is not legal. A judge should follow his conscience and make fair rulings. He should decide objectively, unemotionally and accurately whether the defendant is guilty or not and make a judgement according to the nature of the indictment.

If the judge determines that the defendant is innocent he must rule accordingly and set the person free.

This is the expected role of a judge. It is not expected that he would pervert the course of justice.

ピラトは祭司長たちの訴えを聞いて、取り調べたところ、イエス・キリストには、何の罪をも見出すことができませんでした。

ピラトは、宗教家たちは、イエスが自らを「神の子」と呼んでいるので、神を冒涜していると怒っていること、そして、イエスは病人を癒し、素晴らしい教えを説くので、群衆がイエスに従って行くのを妬んでいたことが分かりました。

こうして、取り調べの結果、ピラトは、イエスが、宗教上の理由と妬みのゆえに告発されたことが分かりました。

Pilate listened to the high priests complaints, examined Jesus and concluded that He had not committed any crime. Pilate realized that the Jewish leaders thought Jesus had blasphemed against God when He claimed to be the Son of God and that they were envious of His popularity with the crowds because He healed many sick people and preached amazing sermons. As a result of his investigations, Pilate knew that Jesus had been brought before him because of the Jewish law and jealousy of the religious leaders.

しかし、ピラトは、もし、ここで、群衆を無視して、イエスを釈放すれば、群衆はきっと、暴動を起こすだろうと思いました。

そうなることはピラトにとって問題でした。

それは、自分が治めている、地区で、暴動が起ったことを、ローマ政府が知れば、ピラトは総督として、民を治める能力に欠けるとみなされ、自分が失脚されるかも知れないと考えました。

背に腹は代えられません。自分の身の安全を思って、間違っていると知っていながら責任ある行動をとりませんでした。

ピラトは、イエスが無罪であることを知っていながら、自分の身の安全を優先して、群衆の願いどおりに十字架刑にしました。

国会で起きている「森友学園」の問題も、政治家たちは間違っていると知りながら、責任ある行動をとらなかったようです。

あってはいけない公文書が書き換えたことが明らかになりました。

それは、国有地が森友学園に破格の安さで売られたことが安倍首相婦人の援助に関連していることを隠すためで有ったようです。

裁判官ピラトの問題は、正義を遂行することよりも、自分の身の安全を第一にしたことです。

すなわち、神の子イエスを守るよりも、自分を優先したことです。

Pilate knew that if he ignored the wishes of the crowds and released Jesus, there would probably be a riot. This would be a problem for Pilate. If a riot erupted in the area he was governing and the news reached Rome he would be considered incapable of controlling the people and would be demoted. It is not possible to solve a problem without making some sacrifices. In order to protect himself, even though he knew it was not right, Pilate took the path of least resistance. Even though he knew that Jesus was innocent, Pilate put his own safety first and gave in to the demands of the crowd.

In a recent case in Japan, the politicians, even though they know they have done wrong, are not taking the responsible path. It has become evident that official documents have been tampered with in the sale of land for Moritomo School. This was done to hide the fact that the Prime Minister`s wife was involved in the buying of government land at a greatly reduced rate for the School.

Pilate, the governor, protected himself rather than doing the right thing. Instead of protecting the innocent Jesus he took care of himself.

大半の人はピラトのように自分の身を守るためには、正義を曲げ妥協します。

妥協しないで、真理のために生きる人は少ないです。

しかし、これら勇気ある少数の人たちが、世の腐敗を止め、人々を救うのです。

イエス様はピラトとは反対に、自分を犠牲にして、人類が罪から救われる救いの道を開きました。

The majority of people will, like Pilate, compromise in order to protect themselves. Not many people will uncompromisingly stand up for the truth. However, these few brave people protect society from further corruption. Unlike Pilate, Jesus sacrificed Himself and opened up the way for the salvation of the world.
