Act justly”

On May 25th, in Minneapolis, a black man, George Floyd was arrested by four policemen on suspicion of tendering a forged $20 note when he went to buy cigarettes. He did not resist arrest and complied with the police orders but was forced to lie face down on the road. One of the white officers held him down on the ground with his knee on Mr Floyd`s neck for 9 minutes. He cried out “I can`t breathe!” but was ignored, and he died from suffocation.

Demonstrations against police brutality and racism were held throughout the country. These demonstrations spread to many other countries such as England, France, Germany and Australia. The rate of Covid 19 infections amongst black people in the States is three times that of white people. This is because they are often poor, live in densely populated areas and do work which makes it easier to become infected. Unemployment due to Covid 19 was the tipping point for anger at social injustice.

In the Old Testament, about 2700 years ago in the days of Micah, there was injustice and racism.

Micah was a prophet living in the eighth century B.C. at the same time as Isaiah. He was from the southern kingdom of Judah during the time of kings Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah and he shared God`s word with both Judah and Israel. He prophesied to the capitals of both kingdoms; Samaria in the north and Jerusalem in the south.

He strongly opposed the oppression, pride, greed, corruption and discrimination prevalent in those places. He warned the people that the righteous God would judge those doing wrong. He told them what God was looking for: “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8.

As the saying, “Birds of a feather flock together” says, we feel an affinity for and feel safe with those who are similar to ourselves. This is a normal instinct. We get together with those like ourselves but put up a barrier towards those who are different. Racial prejudice occurs because when people are different from us because of skin colour, physique, actions or culture we fell it strange and unfamiliar.

If this feeling is allowed to grow, the result is racism which is a social problem and we must endeavour not to build walls towards people who are different from us. Wisdom is needed in order to stop the development of racism and to live in harmony with one another.

Prejudice develops towards a group of people who are different. We should try to learn about other people before racism grows. “Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgement.” John 7:24.

Looking only at the differences engenders fear and prejudice. Even in countries where racism is rife, people of different races marry each other so we know that love will produce harmony and peace. “Over all these virtues put on love which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Colossians 3:14.

We should put ourselves in the other person`s shoes and have compassion for them. It is obvious that the white policeman was lacking in compassion since he kept his knee pressed firmly on Mr Floyd`s neck for 9 minutes even though he said that he could not breathe. If the policeman had put himself in the other man`s shoes, surely he would have stopped what he was doing. Love covers many problems in personal relationships. “Love your neighbour as yourself.” Matthew 22:39.

God is good. He is fair and righteous. Those who believe Him and do good will be rewarded. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9. God loves justice, fairness, impartiality and righteousness so we too should hate racism and treat all people equally regardless of race, social standing and customs. Even if we are treated with partiality in this life, know that in the next life we will be rewarded and comforted. “This is what the Lord Almighty says: `Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another.`” Zechariah 7:9.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” Martin Luther King jr.
