365 Days of Blessing

First Things First まずやるべきこと

First Things First まずやるべきこと

A few years ago, we returned to Japan after twenty-one years away and noticed that there have been some changes during our absence. As we walked along the path towards the station we saw that the grass and weeds growing in the berms beside the path were getting taller and taller until they were practically waist high. Some of the weeds had quite pretty little flowers and the different grasses made a nice picture as they swayed in the breeze but still it was rather untidy and a breeding ground for mosquitoes in summer. We thought we remembered paths being tidier when we lived here before but then again, our memories cannot always be depended on.

Last week, a friend supplied us with a reasonable and convincing answer as to why the footpaths are looking so untidy. He said that since the big earthquake in the northern part of Japan in 2011 large amounts of finance have been required to rebuild that area and support those in need. Less important items, such as trimming the edges of footpaths, are therefore not being done as frequently as before so that money can be better utililised elsewhere.

How easy it is in our own lives to get caught up with taking care of the superficial, cosmetic aspects and forgetting to deal with the deeper, more meaningful areas. “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33
