Handbrake

Have you ever driven the car with the hand brake on? You drive for a while and notice that the car seems heavy, is not going as fast as usual and kind of strange. "Oh, no, what have I done!" you exclaim to yourself. Not only does this wear the brake pads down but it also chews up extra gasoline and puts a strain on the engine. It's not good for the car. Driving with the handbrake on puts a burden on the engine.

However, we often do something like this in life. There are times when we can't seem to move forward because of worrying about things we've done wrong in the past, mistakes, times we've been hurt. The Bible tells us that it is important to stop looking at mistakes and bad experiences from the past which act like a brake, and to turn our eyes to positive goals.

"This one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." — Philippians 3:13-14

"Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that does so easily entangle, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." — Hebrews 12:1
