誘惑に勝つ Resisting Temptation

誘惑に勝つ Resisting Temptation

Someone said that, “Going near to temptation is like someone with a brain made of butter going near a flame.” Approaching temptation and giving in to it is the recipe for disaster.

Today`s message is the sixth in the series on the prayer Jesus taught us an example of how to pray. “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:13.

James 1:14 tells us: “Each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.”

Everybody is tempted. Even Jesus, the Son of God, Himself received temptations. The problem is not that we are tempted. Being tempted is not sin. The problem is when we give in to the temptation. “After desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” James 1:15.

In order to overcome temptation the first step is to avoid places where you might be tempted. Lot chose to go near a place full of temptations and eventually live in it. As a result, he and his family were affected by unsavoury influences, his wife died and his daughters committed unlawful acts.

The second key to overcoming temptation is to resist it at the beginning. If you take one step towards temptation it becomes two steps then three steps and then it is too late. As human beings, every one of us meets temptation on a daily basis. Temptation approaches in an appealing, beguiling guise.

Small fish are captivated by the beauty of a sea anemone and go towards it. If they get to close, it is the end for them.

With something like drugs, once you become addicted it is hard to break free. It is very important that heart disease be treated in the early stages. Leaving it until too late may mean loss of life. People can be saved if they receive medical treatment in the early stages.

“After desire has conceived it gives birth to sin.” James 1:15. This shows us how important it is to deal with temptation in the early stages.

There is some time after a seed has been planted in the ground before a shoot appears. It is not difficult to remove a weed if it is pulled out before the roots have become embedded strongly in the soil. Similarly, if we deal with temptation when it first appears it will not be a problem.

“Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7. Stand firm and resist temptation.

詩編の中で、「あなたに、罪を犯さないため、私はあなたの言葉を蓄えました。」詩篇119:11 と言いました。

The third key is to full our minds with good things. Temptation first attacks in our minds. Know your own weaknesses and reject any unwanted thoughts. We need to decide in advance to do that. If we are not firm with ourselves we will lose the battle.

Fill your mind with good thoughts then it is easier to control our desires. If our stomachs are empty the temptation to eat is strong whereas, if our stomachs are full we can easily resist the temptation to eat. In the same way, if our minds are filled with good thoughts it is much easier to resist temptation. It is especially helpful to fill our minds with verses from the Bible which we can recall when we are faced with temptation. We are told in Psalm 119:12, “I have hidden your word in my heart so that I might not sin against You.”

After Jesus had fasted for 40 days, He was tempted by Satan who said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Matthew 4:2. Jesus resisted the temptation by quoting from the Bible, “Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Do not go near a place where you may be tempted. If we are faced with temptation we should resist it and say “No” straightaway. Fill our minds with the pure Word of the Bible and with good thoughts.
